Students struggle with learning long lists of vocabulary, but they are not taught how to remember them. The unsuccessful performance due to the lack of techniques to remember new words may lead to frustration in the students’ motivation. The objective of the following study is to prove the effectiveness of the loci method; ancient mnemonic technique. To comprehend the use of the loci method, we explain how memory works in terms of capacity, storage and duration. Students use their memory after creating a memory palace for words to be stored. Then, students use the loci method to retrieve the words from their memory palace, this way memory is linked to this ancient technique. We work with two different groups of students. One group is introduced the method in a detailed way, in order to use it properly at the moment of learning ten different verbs in past participle tense in the context of passive voice structure, and the other group works without any mnemonic technique. At the end of the study, the effectiveness of the loci method is proved due to the fact that the group which work with the technique remember the words over time.
